Are there other options
besides a MBAs?
University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business (USGSB)
While many may think an MBA is the only way to a top career in business,
there are other options available to improve career prospects and gain the
advantage in the battle for top jobs.
The University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business (USGSB) offers
two postgraduate programmes of interest to younger graduates, the MBM and
BITS programmes.
For those straight out of university, or who dont have the requisite business
experience needed for an MBA, an MSc in Business Management (MBM) could
be the way to achieve that elusive advantage, and get you started on a career
in business.
Students are typically aged from 22 to 27 and have a good first degree.
The qualification is particularly suited to graduates from Engineering,
Science, Arts, Humanities and other non-business disciplines, although holders
of degrees in business studies are not precluded.
USGSB took parts of the MBA programme that were suitable for students with
no business experience and added other subjects to create a qualification
that is popular with employers.
Subjects that are shared with the Strathclyde MBA include information systems,
data management, business statistics, and personal and managerial skills
such as chairing meetings and giving presentations. Subjects unique to the
MBM include business economics and general management.
The MBM gives graduates a thorough induction to essential management concepts,
tools, functions and disciplines, as well as an understanding of business
policy and planning.
Whats more, after obtaining sufficient business experience, an MBM graduate
may convert it to an MBA by taking additional credits via flexible learning.
The Business and Information Technology Systems programme (BITS) would also
appeal to young graduates. This programme aims to produce confident and
effective graduates to be the hybrid managers of the 21st century equipped
with enough understanding of ICT and the fundamentals of business to contribute
to both the strategic development and operation of ICT in organisations.
BITS is a conversion course aimed at those who have either business backgrounds
and are interested in ICT or have ICT backgrounds and are interested in
business, and are interested in a career spanning these areas. We welcome
students who have some prior knowledge or experience of ICT or business
(or both) but if you lack either of these backgrounds, you will be quickly
brought up to standard at the beginning of the course.
Both the MBM and BITS programmes are full time in Glasgow, lasting 12 months,
and offer a good mix of nationalities, allowing students to feed off each
others experiences in the learning process, and understand new ways of
thinking and working. Lecturers with international experience gained through
consultancy and research as well as an emphasis on group work are also factors
which contribute to two very worthwhile degrees.
